What is NGFW IPS?

NGFW IPS offers layered defense by combining two key technologies. The Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW) regulates and inspects traffic entering and exiting a network using features like application control, URL filtering, and encrypted traffic insights.

Meanwhile, the Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) is responsible for identifying and blocking malicious traffic. It uses threat intelligence, pattern recognition, and behavioral analysis to stop cyberattacks. Together, these technologies allow NGFW IPS to provide robust, proactive protection against a range of threats—from suspicious data packets to sophisticated exploits.

For instance, when a remote access trojan (RAT) is planted on a network, a NGFW IPS can identify and block the threat by analyzing domain name queries, direct IP communication, suspicious upstream DNS changes, beaconing and/or heartbeat activity, abuse of common protocols such as DNS and ICMP and stuffing larger data packets into them, etc.
